“Support for Success is a new social enterprise based in York which offers unaccredited community based learning & development opportunities with the aim of removing barriers so anyone can engage in a positive learning experience and achieve their potential, regardless of background or situation. Support for Success empowers individuals and unites communities using the power of learning. Courses are delivered both in a classroom sessions and individually as distance learning packages. These can range from stress management, goal setting, emotional intelligence, building personal confidence, creative writing, self-awareness to time management & organisational skills.
I made the decision to set up Support for Success after several years of working in accredited adult learning and development, where I witnessed numerous individuals turned away from learning opportunities as they didn’t satisfy specified funding requirements. It has become increasingly apparent that many individuals feel that they could engage with learning opportunities based within their own communities and which is facilitated by someone local who they knew and trusted. Such individuals often fall through the net and end up isolated and unsupported in pursuing learning in their adult years. I experienced negative past learning experiences and have truly discovered the power of a personalised, supportive and flexible approach to learning, which is a real motive behind the foundation of the enterprise.
Ultimately, the two greatest challenges for Support for Success are cost and sustainability. The high running costs of classroom or meeting space hire, and the cost in widening access and inclusivity for all bare challenges for the enterprise. Also, as the social enterprise is ran from my home, to realistically expand and develop, I must acquire office space.
Spark:York would enable me to facilitate regular learning sessions in a central location and would reduce the financial burden often associated with securing premises, so I can instead focus money and effort on delivering front line services to clients. I feel if I could secure access to low cost premises I could grow the work of the enterprise substantially. Not only that, I believe that collaborative working and a strong network is key to any organisation’s growth and I feel Spark:York would facilitate this for all businesses across York, particularly to social enterprises. Good people, trying to do good things for positive social change. If new social enterprises knew they could avoid the financial strain of expensive premises it is likely that York would see a bounce in social enterprise activity, leading to a thriving city which enables all its citizens to grow and prosper.”
